PHILADELPHIA-After more than 85 years in the Widener Building at 1339Chestnut St. across from City Hall, and 198 years in Center City, J.E.Caldwell & Co., will close its 12,000-sf store here this June. This closingfollows by a year, the exit of a Bailey Banks & Biddle upscale jewelry storeat 16th and Chestnut.

Once the carriage trade retail venue in Center City, surrounded by upscaleclothiers, this Chestnut St. stretch suffered high vacancies for nearly adecade. With the opening of a Borders store last summer at 13th andChestnut, it is undergoing a renaissance of retailers that serve a less rarifieddemographic.
