NYC Wages $106M War--Against Deadbeat Governments

NEW YORK CITY-The city wants its tax money from foreign governments that are allegedly using city properties for more than tax-exempt purposes. At least one embassy says that the city's interpretation is wrong while another says a settlement is in the works.

NEW YORK CITY-Never mind the embassy limos illegally parked all over Manhattan. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg has bigger fish to fry with certain foreign governments that are reportedly stiffing the city on property taxes.

The city reports that lawsuits have been filed in Manhattan State Supreme Court against the governments of Turkey, the Philippines, India and Mongolia. The suit seeks payment of back taxes, charges and interests totaling $106.2 million.

According to city documents, Turkey is the biggest offender, with a $70-million tax bill hovering over its head. The bill amounts drop off precipitously from there, with the Philippines in arrears for $17.7 million, India in the hole for $16.4 million and Mongolia owing $2.1 million.
