"We are currently in lease negotiations with Chelsea Market for space to house Food Network," a spokesperson at Food Network confirms for GlobeSt.com.
Newmark handles the leasing for the 1.1-million sf building, which was constructed in 1934. But beyond confirming that talks are underway, executives there remained mum. But insiders reveal that the talks are close to the handshake stage, and that the newtork will occupy ground-floor studio space when the talking is done.
According to sources, ground-floor studio space in Chelsea Market, at 75 Ninth Ave., could go for $75 a foot, while other space in the building is $30 per sf., whether it be sublease or direct. Food Network currently has studios at 604 W.52nd St.
A previous GlobeSt.com article detailed how street-front newsrooms have become all the rage among broadcasting companies in the past few years. Construction began on new studio space for Fox News at 1211 Ave. of the Americas, some 8,900 sf, last September. The plan is to use the space for what has been described as an audience-participation program, originally slated to launch last month, but postponed to the then-pending conflict in Iraq.
Food Network reaches an estimated audience of more than 78 million US households and four million Website users and can be seen internationally in Canada, Australia, Korea, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines, Monaco, Andorra, France and the French-speaking territories in the Caribbean and Polynesia. Food Network is headquartered in New York City and has offices in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit and Knoxville,TN and is part of E.W. Scripps Co.
