SAN DIEGO-It’s back to the drawing board for JMI Development’s East Village Square master plan, as Mayor Dick Murphy and the San Diego City Council have directed the city and Centre City Development staff to negotiate for a larger community park within the three-block, mixed-use development.

JMI Development’s proposal was originally listed on the city council’s April 29th docket, as council members were slated to consider the plan and the CCDC’s recommendation for approval of the project. However, Mayor Murphy pulled the proposal from the docket, saying that the city “must keep faith” with San Diego’s voters. “When they approved Proposition C in 1998, they believed that the downtown redevelopment project would include a sizable park beyond the outfield wall with views of the game,” he commented. Current design plans call for a smaller park than the one included in initial renderings.
