Voters Approve Expansion of Denver Health Hospital

DENVER-The hospital primarily responsible for caring for Denver's indigent and uninsured will get more beds and a new outpatient facility, thanks to voters' approval of a bond issue on this week's ballot.

DENVER- By about a 65% margin, Denver voters approved a $148 million bond issue this week to build a five-story addition to the Denver Health Medical Center that will add hospital beds and an outpatient center to the facility. The new two-building facility will measure 242,000 sf and include 139 new beds, increasing Denver Health’s beds to 450 from 311.

This will represent the second major expansion of the hospital in recent years. Denver Health began a 110-bed expansion in 2001 by borrowing about $142 million from private sources; that expansion is expected to be completed this summer. Denver Health’s mission is to care for the area’s indigent and uninsured, and proponents of the bond issue pointed to large recent increases in demand for the hospital’s services—because of the weak economy—as justification for further expansion.
