A preliminary plan, presented to the Lower Gwynedd board of supervisors, comesto a vote this week. Traffic on roadways bordering the 172-acre campus, is apoint of contention.
The plan calls for the construction of nine additional buildings andexpansion of five of the nine existing buildings on the campus. Theadditions would take the current total square footage of 636,000 sf to nearly 1.5million sf. According to J&J, approximately 1,300 employees, includingscientists, researchers, lawyers and others, would be added to the existingtotal of about 1,000.
Three J&J companies, Pharmaceutical Sourcing Group America, PharmaceuticalResearch & Development, and Centocor, Inc., which J&J acquired for $4.9million in 1999, now have facilities on the campus.
Expansion would begin with expansion of an existing warehouse andconstruction of a utility plant, including fuel storage and generatorcapabilities. Three additional facilities would be completed between 2006and 2009, with a majority of the additional space coming on stream in 2011.
J&J consists of more than 200 companies worldwide. It had sales of $36.3billion in 2002.
