Seniors Celebrate New Option in West Baltimore

BALTIMORE-Affordable housing for the elderly, in the form of the new $8.6 million Harlem Gardens Senior Apartments, comes to the impoverished community of Harlem Park. The 94-unit residential building is the first of what will be a series of mostly residential developments in the neighborhood.

BALTIMORE-Doors to the new Harlem Gardens Senior Apartments have officially opened today with a ribbon cutting ceremony to welcome the $8.6 million redevelopment endeavor. Harlem Gardens is the first phase of a 24-block redevelopment initiative in West Baltimore’s downtrodden Harlem Park neighborhood.

The 94-unit structure also marks the first new housing construction to take place in the community in a quarter century. Nonprofit development organization Harlem Park Revitalization Corp. and Bank of America are behind the renewal endeavor.
