John Hollis Allen, the authority's chairman, compares the center's presence and economic value to College Park in South Fulton County to the opening of Hartsfield in 1980. The center is the first component of Gateway Center, a planned 155-acre, mixed-use venture of hotels and offices just west of the airport.

About 2,000 residents and invited guests attended an open house at the center's site at Gateway Center, off Camp Creek Parkway. The one-story building has 32-foot-high walls and a ballroom that can accommodate 2,000 guests.
