The rehab project, which began in the fall of last year, has resulted in the demolition of the prior facility. In its place, a 49,250-sf clubhouse and 6,900-sf fitness center are being built. Designed by San Diego-based Altevers Associates, the project will feature a stone veneer and concrete roof tiles. Interior details will include stone tile, marble, custom, casework and granite features. In addition, the property will boast a wine cellar, four fireplaces and a water feature in the entry courtyard.

San Diego-based Roel Construction Co. is building the new facilities, with Mark Davis of Desert Builders acting as the construction manager. Dennis Nighswonger is the general manager for Thunderbird Country Club, which is owned by an entity of the same name.

Located at 70-612 Highway 111 in Rancho Mirage, Thunderbird first opened its doors for business on January 8, 1951. Created by amateur golf champion Johnny Dawson, the club brought several new innovations to the golf industry, including the desert's first 18-hole golf course, the first electric buggy and the golf course residential community concept.
