Omega Protein Pushes Forward on New $16M Plant

REEDVILLE, VA-Development plans for Omega Protein Corp.’s new processing plant have taken a significant step forward with Greenville, SC-based Suitt Construction Co.’s start of construction activity on the 60,000-sf facility. Upon its scheduled completion in May of next year, the $16 million plant will offer three times as much space as Omega Protein’s existing Reedville facility, thereby increasing production capacity to 100-metric-tons per-day.

Houston-headquartered Omega Protein, which is the largest manufacturer of menhaden-based fish oils in the US, will use the new space to process its heart-healthy OmegaPure product containing Omega-3 essential fatty acids. The plant will offer a separate mechanical building, 20,000 sf of freezer and warehouse space, 7,000 sf of office and lab space and a packaging area. “Omega Protein’s new facility will be environmentally friendly, energy efficient, and pleasing to the community,” says Suitt Construction vice president Frank Holley. “The facility will be state-of-the-art.”
