Vancouver to Host 2010 Winter Olympics

VANCUVER, B.C. – The 107-member International Olympic Committee has voted to bring the 2010 Winter Games to Vancouver, B.C. The city edged out Pyeongchang, South Korea by just three votes to become the largest metropolitan area selected to host a Winter Games. The Winter Games is the first Olympics for B.C. and the third for Canada.

Oragnizers in Vancouver have a budget of about $2 billion Canadien, in part to develop new “legacy” facilties for the event, such as a an additional hockey facility, a Nordic center and athlete housing at Whistler, a bobsled/luge track and a speedskating oval and ice sheet in Downtown Vancouver. About $600 million will be spent to widen and otherwise improve the cliff-hanging, 60-mile stretch of Highway 99 that takes skiers from Vancouver to Whistler.
