The San Francisco-based company took over the management of the 188-room hotel on July 15 and plans to shutter the property for a complete redevelopment and renovation. The plans also call for expanding the hotel to include 205 rooms and a new restaurant and bar concept. However, at this time the company has not chosen a specific theme for the hotel or a new name.

The hotel, located at the corner of Park Avenue and 38th Street, is owned by a Seattle-based investment group.

Local interior designer Jeffrey Bilhuber has been selected to create the interior look of the hotel and the local office of Gensler will provide architectural services.

This will be Kimpton's first foray into Manhattan. It operates 38 hotels and 39 restaurants in the US and Canada, including San Francisco, Washington, DC and Chicago, and plans to open the Onyx Hotel in Boston in September.
