The property, which shares its name with the exclusive resort village in Italy, will feature Tuscan-style architecture and an Italian hillside theme. Designed by Architects Orange, the completed project is expected to complement neighboring developments like the 90-acre Escala master-planned community that Shea Homes and Continental Homes are currently building. Rising on the north side of Friars Road between Northside Drive and Fenton Parkway, Portofino "has been designed as a cohesive neighborhood that will integrate with the Mission City community on both sides of Friars Road," according to Mike Neal, president and CEO of H.G. Fenton Co.

At build-out, Portofino will offer residences ranging from loft-style designs encompassing approximately 790 sf to one-, two-, and three-bedroom floorplans spanning between 730 sf to 1,375 sf, with some units featuring garages. Communitywide amenities will include a clubhouse, pool, spa, business center, fitness facility, gated entry access and a trail system for walking, biking and jogging.

General contractor Wermers Construction is building the project. Gillespie Design is handling the landscape architecture.

Portofino has special significance for H.G. Fenton Co., says Neal, explaining that the 97-year-old firm used to own all 200 acres of land that is currently known as Mission City. The company, which does own Portofino's 16.5-acre site, has worked closely with the City of San Diego in the development of the Mission City Specific Plan.
