WASHINGTON, DC-The Center for Housing Policy–a research arm of public policy and housing advocacy organization the National Housing Conference–has released a new report revealing that immigrant households are approximately 70% more inclined than households of US-born residents to dedicate more than half their monthly income to housing. The study, entitled “America’s Newest Working Families: Cost, Crowding and Conditions for Immigrants,” accentuates the crucial and increasing demand for affordable housing all over the US. The issue extends well beyond the border states that serve as the main ports of entry for a great number of immigrants.

“As the fastest growing segment of America’s workforce, immigrants are of increasing economic importance to their communities, but affordable housing concerns and crowding data revealed in this study make it clear that today’s immigrants are facing more than the traditional challenges of their predecessors,” NHC chairman G. Allan Kingston explains. The report is the first in what will be several specially funded studies released on the state of working families.
