Anthony Lombardo, president of the Lombardo Companies here, says he's waiting for the economy to improve before he develops land in both Washington and Shelby townships his company already owns, both of which are zoned industrial.

"We'll enter that business when the market turns and demand picks up for industrial buildings," he says.

Lombardo also says his company has land, plans and permits in hand for about 1,000 apartment units, all in Macomb County, for when demand picks up for that type of housing. Currently, the company is focused strictly on residential development and plans to sell 250-300 single-family homes or condominiums in 2003.

Over the past several years, Lombardo has emerged as the largest builder of residential property in Macomb County. He adds the company has built about 16,000 homes, virtually all in Macomb County, since it was founded in 1961.
