If approvals are granted, construction on the anchor store for the mall likely would begin in January, says a mall spokeswoman.

Lord & Taylor would join Sears, Marshall Fields and JC Penney as anchor stores on the mall, which is visible from Interstate 75 and fronts 14 Mile Road.

The New York-based department store chain is finishing up interior work on its Lakeside mall store in Sterling Heights, as well. That store was increased by 40,000 sf to 160,000 sf during a construction project last winter. Interior renovations have been going on since then. The Lakeside store employs more than 120 people, a number that likely will be comparable for the Oakland Mall location once completed, the company says.

Lord & Taylor does not release information on store sales or costs, a spokeswoman adds.

Lord & Taylor says the recent work in Metropolitan Detroit is part of a larger effort to upgrade and modernize the chain's 86 stores and to move into new target areas.
