While the condos are just the first phase, Steenbergh also envisions a new library, parks and pedestrian friendly retail locations and restaurants in the new city center area. Already, the former Royal Coventry Hotel, deemed by many in the community as an eyesore, has been demolished to make way for new improvements.

The General Motors Technical Center, which fronts the entire west side of Van Dyke from 12 to 13 Mile, has agreed to give the city additional right of way, if needed, for road changes to Van Dyke, which may eventually be change to a divided boulevard.The new Sunset Park Condominiums condos will feature 96 units in the $180,000 to $250,000 range for 1,300 to 2,100 sf.

Alino Construction of Wixom is the developer of the project, which is located near 12 Mile and Van Dyke. The project is expected to be completed in 2005.City leaders say having additional residential space in the downtown area is a crucial part of the plan, to provide a population base to support new restaurants and retail businesses.
