WARREN, MI-Ground has been broken on a $19-million condo project that marks the beginning of the creation of a downtown area here.Under a plan laid out by Mayor Mark Steenbergh late last year, Michigan’s third largest city is attempting to create a downtown area along Van Dyke Avenue, roughly in the area between 12 and 13 Mile Roads.

While the condos are just the first phase, Steenbergh also envisions a new library, parks and pedestrian friendly retail locations and restaurants in the new city center area. Already, the former Royal Coventry Hotel, deemed by many in the community as an eyesore, has been demolished to make way for new improvements.
