Born in Greensboro, NC, Bowles previously was a director at Merck & Co., Wachovia Corp., VF Corp., Community Healthcare Corp., McLeod USA Inc. and Citadel Communications. He currently is a director at Winston-Salem, NC-based Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corp.

Bowles began is business career in the corporate finance department of New York-based Morgan Stanley & Co. He later founded Bowles Hollowell Conner & Co. in Charlotte, NC,co-founded the merchant bank, Carousel Capital Co., and was a partner in the New York private equity firm of Forstmann Little & Co.

Bowles' public sector career began as administrator of the federal Small Business Administration where he is credited with reorganizing the agency to make it more efficient and effective in providing capital to America's small business, according to Cousins' Bell.

Following his assignment as chief of staff to Clinton, Bowles served on both the National Security Council and National Economic Council and as a member of the President's Cabinet.
