Foreign Affairs Training Center to Grow By 90,000 SF

ARLINGTON, VA-The George P. Shultz National Foreign Affairs Training Center is in line for additional space now that the US General Services Administration has selected Holabird & Root to act as the architect/engineer team for the endeavor. The project will augment the existing 400,000-sf property by approximately 92,000 sf, and could cost as much as an estimated $24 million. The complex sits on 72 acres of land and carries the address of 4000 Arlington Blvd. Holabird & Root beat out five other teams for the job under the federal Design Excellence procurement process.

An outpost of the US Department of State the Shultz NFATC complex was built 10 years ago from a design by the joint venture architectural team of Sasaki/Mitchell-Giurgola Associates. It serves as the home of the Foreign Service Institute, the professional development training organization for officers and support personnel of the US foreign affairs community. Holabird & Root will handle design endeavors for the addition of 78,000 sf of space to accommodate administrative, instructional, multipurpose, and storage needs. The team will also design the detached childcare center, which will be 14,000 sf in size.
