A tentative groundbreaking date on the first phase hasn't been set. The first phase of the 20-year project may not open until 2008, hospital officials caution. Limited parking areas at the existing campus was a major factor in the planned relocation.

For the city, an international speedway and tourist location, the hospital's long-range development plans for a new main campus will mean a broader tax base for the city and hundreds of new jobs for the construction industry, vendors and suppliers, city officials say. The existing campus is in a prime commercial sector, near the Daytona Beach International Airport, Daytona International Speedway and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.

The new site, northwest of the existing hospital, is in a fast-growing part of the city, east of Interstate 95 and the LPGA interchange.
