Klingel, who had been acting president for the organization, assumed the permanent job on Sept. 1. He had been on leave from his position as executive vice president of the Minneapolis Downtown Council. The 50-year-old St. Paul, native has been active in economic and community development efforts in Minneapolis for the past 20 years.

One of the chamber's top missions is to strengthen the region's economy by supporting business growth and development, Klingel says. The appointment should help the chamber and the Downtown Council to cooperate on economic development efforts, says Sam Grabarski, president and chief executive officer of the council.
