The new 250,000-sf store is located at 1975 W. University Ave., a rare metropolitan store for the predominantly suburban and rural stores among the 182 owned and operated by the retailer chain. The new two-story store also differs from the typical one-story Menards format.

The Wisconsin-based home and building supply chain recently razed two buildings on the site at University and Prior Avenues--a store for Knox Lumber, a former competitor, and the Twin Motor Inn.

Menards initial proposal had been a giant, blank wall facing University Avenue, according to University UNITED, a coalition of Midway citizens and businesses. After several meetings with University UNITED, and representatives of Hamline Midway Coalition and Merriam Park Community Council, they spruced up the south-facing wall.

Payless Cashways, the financially struggling Kansas City-based home improvement store chain, closed down its Knox Lumber store a couple years ago. Late last year, Menards bought the Knox site as well as the adjacent Twin Motor Inn. The new St. Paul store is expected to be ready to open in the summer of 2004.
