09/10/03: According to the Institute of Supply Management, productivity increased for the second straight month in August. This is a terrific indicator of economic growth from both a management and production standpoint. Of course, employees may have a totally different point of view. We're entering a phase of this recovery where we're expecting an ever-increasing number of hours from a workforce that is already stretched thin. The challenging part of this trend is how does one motivate a workforce that is neither expanding nor receiving wage increases? Soon it won't be good enough to say, "Well, at least you have a job." As the economic engine begins to rumble stronger and payrolls do expand, the competition for qualified employees will rev up. Are you ready to pay the price?
