$335M Census Bureau Behemoth is Under Construction

SUITLAND, MD-All 6,000 or so employees of the US Census Bureau can look forward to working together under one roof now that the US General Services Administration has broken ground on the organization’s new 1.5 million-sf headquarters facility at the Suitland Federal Center. The gargantuan $335 million endeavor will be erected in two phases, with the design-build team of Dallas-based HKS Inc. and Whitestone, NY-based Skanska USA Building Inc. spearheading construction.

“This headquarters will revitalize and transform Suitland Federal Center,” GSA assistant regional administrator Anthony E. Costa says. “It will relocate Census from several buildings that have lasted beyond their useful life, into a beautiful workspace filled with natural light.” The organization is currently spread out among various structures on the Suitland campus, as well as other leased spaces in buildings in the surrounding area.
