Trustees in Saginaw County's Bridgeport Township rejected Hausbeck Pickle Co. Inc.'s request to rezone 37.5 residential acres for light industry so it can build a $2.5 million processing plant.
Hausbeck Pickle's 43 employees produce 25 million pounds of pickles and four million pounds of banana and jalapeno peppers annually at its 80-year-old, 20,000-sf plant in neighboring Spaulding Township, about 100 miles north of Detroit.
The new, 30,000-sf facility would help the company, which supplies Subway with one-third of its pickles, keep up with that chain's rapid growth. Subway last year surpassed McDonald's in the number of stores in the US.
Hausbeck Pickle's 2002 contract with Subway has ballooned from 1,800 restaurants to about 4,500. Customers also include Burger King, Checkers, Hot 'N Now, Rally's and Flint-based Halo Burger.
The company is looking at a potential site elsewhere in Spaulding Township and one in Buena Vista Township, Hausbeck says.
