The international company wants to build a new plant on 18 acres it hopes to purchase from Visteon Corp. along Interstate 94.

The Belgium-based firm also wants to buy an adjacent 7.4 acres from the City of Ypsilanti to use as a parking lot for the proposed facility on the northeast corner of Huron Street and I-94.

Formerly a landfill, it is the largest vacant property the city owns, with the City Council scheduled to hold a public hearing on the sale of the land later this fall. The city has owned the landfill for a long time and is asking about $250,000 for the land.

Bosal, an after-market automotive supplier with a technical center in Ann Arbor, wants to build a 130,000-sf building to serve as a headquarters and a manufacturing facility, says John Miles, president of Bosal in North America.

The plant will provide 350 jobs, including 200 manufacturing positions. Some of the jobs are new and the rest are being transferred from different sites nationwide, he says.

Bosal plans to relocate its offices and 36 employees from an Ann Arbor location along Metty Drive to the city, Miles says.

All plans are still in the preliminary stages and negotiations continue with Visteon to buy the land, Miles says. Bosal hopes to build the plant next year, he adds.

Bosal, founded in the Netherlands in 1923, has 26 manufacturing plants and 26 distribution centers worldwide and employs 6,125 employees. It posted $800 million in sales last year, Miles says.
