The mixed-use redevelopment-anchored by a Home Depot and Sam's Club-already witnessed the opening of a 130,000-sf Home Depot earlier this year, and construction on several other stores is underway or will be started this fall, said Dale Countegan, the Farmington Hills director of planning and community development.

The 650,000-sf project, discussed for more than a decade and developed by Farmington Hills-based Grand Sakwa Properties Inc., is on Northwestern Highway east of Orchard Lake Road.

The Sam's Club, now under construction, will total about 150,000 sf once completed and is expected to be open this fall. A TGI Friday's restaurant that is 5,000 - 6,000 sf is also on target to open this fall.

Grand Sakwa also is building a single-story, multi-tenant building. The 10,000-sf structure will be home to about four tenants.

The four buildings in the first phase will fill about 33 acres of the 92-acre site. To make room for the first phase of the development, Grand Sakwa acquired and demolished about 60 homes near Clairview Court, just south of 14 Mile Road.

About six homes remain on the site. Those are expected to be acquired as part of future phases, which will push west to Orchard Lake Road.

Future phases of the North Orchard project are expected to include commercial, residential and office.
