A 14,000-sf facility will be built at the county's Elizabeth Road complex for Public Works commissioner Anthony Marrocco and his staff of about 40. Construction costs are expected to range from $1.5 million to $1.7 million.
The current building suffers from poor heating and air conditioning, rusty water pipes and an overloaded electrical system. It will be demolished when Marrocco's department makes its move next year, Marrocco says.
The new building will be located on Dunham Road between the county Animal Shelter and the VerKuilen Building, after county officials approved the new site last Tuesday.
After the county planning department moved Downtown to the new county Administration Building in 1998, a portion of the building occupied by Marrocco was demolished. Last year, the county Road Commission moved out of an adjacent building and into a newly constructed facility on the same Groesbeck site.
Construction of the new building is expected to begin in the spring and could be completed before the end of 2004.The new project comes at a time when two other major construction efforts at the Elizabeth Road complex are nearing completion of phase one.
The expansion of Martha T. Berry Hospital will be finished in early October and the new facilities will be in use by November or December. The second, third and fourth phases, involving improvements to the existing medical facility, will be completed in 2005.
The Youth Home addition will be done by the end of October and will be operational by November or December. The second phase of that project--renovation of a portion of the existing Youth Home, demolition of the oldest section--will continue through 2004.
