The facility includes a 50-bed homeless shelter with attached soup kitchen, social services center and church sanctuary. A 30,000-sf warehouse is located across the parking lot to serve as a warehouse for the Gleaners Food Bank.

The land for the property was donated to the Salvation Army by the federal government and by General Motors, whose Warren Powertrain Plant borders the property along Mound Road on the south. The property, known as Arsenal Acres and comprising a little more than five acres, was used before and during World War II to house Navy and Army officers working at a neighboring tank and weapons manufacturing center. The tank plant closed in 1991, though the housing area had not been used for several years prior.

With the opening of the new Warren Corps Service Center, Salvation Army Maj. Nathan Johnson, the local commander, says buildings the Salvation Army owns in Roseville and Warren will be up for sale.

"We've already had some interest in Roseville," Johnson says.

"The new warehouse will alleviate storage problems in the soup kitchens and pantries," says Russ Russell, executive director of development for the Eastern Michigan Division of the Salvation Army. "The new warehouse will significantly increase our ability to feed the hungry throughout the Metropolitan area."

The city used Community Development Block Grants to remove the old military buildings on the property prior to the Salvation Army's construction project, which began last year.
