The first public meeting on the subject is scheduled for Oct. 9. The commissioners expect to vote on the ordinance Nov. 5.

Posted on the Fulton County government website, the ordinance proposes partially crediting developers for land that couldn't be developed, such as wetlands, flood plains, steep slopes or other environmentally protected areas.

The county proposes reducing density by allowing developers to build the same number of homes on smaller parcels. For example, if a one-home-per-acre zoning is permitted on a one-acre tract, the developer would be asked instead to build one home per half-acre lot.

The commissioners maintain conservation subdivisions also reduce the cost of construction because less land is developed.
