The construction, which is expected to begin in October and take about a year to complete, is the second expansion project at the airport in three years.

In October of 2000, a $13.25 million terminal expansion was completed that added four new boarding gates, a new gift shop, a new lounge and snack shop, an expanded waiting area for passengers and a work area for business travelers.

That 52,000-sf expansion was constructed by Sorenson Gross, which was awarded the bid to do the new expansion work. The company also built the original terminal building at the airport.

The expansion comes at a time when Bishop Airport continues to set passenger records. Through the first eight months of 2003, a record 318,221 passengers have boarded flights at the Flint airport, up 34.88% from 2002.
