BOSTON-Two bids were submitted to the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority in response to its request for proposals to develop parcel six, a 40,000 sf site on the surface artery between the North End and Haymarket that will be exposed once the Big Dig is completed.

Both the YMCA and the Boston Museum project proposed developing five-story buildings on the property. The YMCA would use the site to develop a larger facility while the museum project wants to create a city museum.

“[The property] is in a really strategic location,” Doug Hanchett, a MassPike spokesperson tells GlobeSt.com. The parcel is situated between New Chardon, New Sudbury, Cross and North Washington streets .Hanchett explains that the parcel, the first of the surface artery parcels that is being put out to bid, involves an air rights ground lease as it is located over five ramps that lead into the Route 93 tunnel. The developer would have a 99-year lease with MassPike. Hanchett adds that the RFP, which was put out in August, stipulated that the first preference would be given to community use.
