Plan Outlined for Eastern Market

DETROIT-A $30 million proposal is on the table to improve the historic Eastern Market area, possibly in time to be the site of a pre-game tailgate mega-party ahead of the Superbowl in 2006.

DETROIT-A $30 million plan is being floated to improve Detroit’s historic Eastern Market area. The Greater Downtown Partnership recently completed a nine-month study of the nation’s largest produce district and developed a plan that calls for upgrading city streets, improving building facades and adding more entertainment events.

Among the goals is to have Eastern Market serve as the site of a the pre-game tailgate party when Detroit hosts the Super Bowl in January 2006.

Other sites under consideration for the tailgate party are Cobo Center and Comerica Park, said Susan Sherer, executive director of the Detroit Super Bowl XL Host Committee. Two NFL representatives are scheduled to visit Detroit next month to scout various venues for the tailgate and other activities, she said.
