The largest single grant was $7.5 million to Detroit Metro Airport in Romulus to pay for a noise study and noise attenuation. Sawyer International Airport, just south of Marquette in Gwinn received just under $7.1 million to help finance an expansion of the fuel farm, hangar improvements, installation of air traffic control tower equipment and the construction of a storage building.
"Investing in our system of airports is vital to the state and national economy, and central to our transportation mission," says Rob Abent, director of the state's Multi-modal Transportation Services Bureau. "Keeping airports open for use and regularly maintained is our highest priority. These projects are key to continuing the flow of goods and people in a safe and reliable manner."
The commission also approved funds for the following projects:
– $21,000 to Branch County Memorial Airport in Coldwater for runway modifications;
– $797,900 to Detroit City Airport in Detroit for taxiway rehabilitation;
– $330,000 to Delta County Airport in Escanaba terminal expansion;
– $117,263 to Bishop International Airport in Flint for the installation of explosive trace detection equipment and a Master Plan Update;
– $562,000 to Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids for security system improvement reimbursements;
– $110,000 to Houghton County Memorial Airport in Hancock for the purchase of snow removal equipment, designs for runway lighting and safety improvements;
– $27,000 to Ionia County Airport in Ionia for wetland mitigation for the construction of a taxiway;
– $130,071 to Muskegon County Airport in Muskegon for security enhancements;
–$61,111 to Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City for runway safety area improvements; and,
– $28,200 to Paradise Area Airport in Whitefish Township for a site feasibility study.
