LANSING, MI-The Michigan Aeronautics Commission has approved more than $28 million in grants to improve the state’s system of public-use airports. The grants will be used for a wide variety of construction, security enhancements and some operational expenses at a dozen Michigan airports.

The largest single grant was $7.5 million to Detroit Metro Airport in Romulus to pay for a noise study and noise attenuation. Sawyer International Airport, just south of Marquette in Gwinn received just under $7.1 million to help finance an expansion of the fuel farm, hangar improvements, installation of air traffic control tower equipment and the construction of a storage building.

“Investing in our system of airports is vital to the state and national economy, and central to our transportation mission,” says Rob Abent, director of the state’s Multi-modal Transportation Services Bureau. “Keeping airports open for use and regularly maintained is our highest priority. These projects are key to continuing the flow of goods and people in a safe and reliable manner.”
