"It is a simple fact that airports are proving to be major engines of economic development throughout the UK and Europe. Bristol International has less business-related development than any other comparable airport, so its potential to boost the area's economy remains constrained until the green belt factor is tackled", said Cussen.
He conceded however that as well as a restrictive planning climate owing to green belt regulations, location and poor access were compounding the problems: "This is, of course a politically charged issue, but it is one that must be addressed", he said.
