The hotel and restaurant had long been considered a jewel on Detroit's far east side, but Mark Abdulnoor, who purchased the property in May along with two partners operating as SAS Inc., said it was time to revitalize the facility.

"This is an older hotel, so it needs a new look, an update," he said.

SAS is investing about $450,000 in remodeling the exterior of the building. Little touches are being done in the rooms and they are being modernized by adding such conveniences as high-speed internet access.

The Georgian Inn was built along Gratiot Avenue in 1965, with a pool added later that year. The Inn features 111 rooms, the L-Bow Room restaurant, and three ballrooms of varying size.

Abdulnoor said most of the renovation work at the hotel should be done by the end of November. He said the restaurant would also be getting some sprucing up.

SAS owns about 50 hotel properties, mostly in southeast Michigan. Abdulnoor said the hotel business has been soft over the past couple of years.

"There are too many new hotels and the economy is not strong enough now to fill them all," he said.

Abdulnoor said when the remodeling efforts are finished at the Georgian Inn, the hotel will target more business travelers.

"We're not that far from I-94, we have shuttle service to the airport, the casinos aren't that far and we have very nice accommodations," said Mary Ann Robertson, director of regional marketing at the hotel.
