James F. Smith, who has managed more than $1 billion in healthcare design and construction projects worldwide during his 30-year career, has joined the new division, Miller Healthcare Services, as a principal. Smith, a registered professional engineer, has senior-level expertise in the business and technical aspects of healthcare facility planning, programming, design and construction. He has experience in the public and private sectors in 17 states and other countries.

"With patient loads growing and reimbursements declining, healthcare provider CEOs and facility directors are strategically focused on doing far more within their physical and budgetary constraints--through new construction or renovations on their existing site, and/or through expansion/replacement on new sites," says Thomas J. Miller, CEO of Miller Construction Co.

Under the direction of Smith, the division is managing a $10-million project for Holy Cross Hospital in the city. The project, in the hospital's medical office building, is creating the first two of six planned new cardiac catheterization labs.

With its comprehensive program management, the division complements Miller Construction Co.'s Healthcare Group, the construction services team that handles renovation and expansion projects for health care facilities.
