In a press conference less than a week before he stands for re-election to a third term, Warren Mayor Mark Steenbergh announced plans for new buildings and renovations that could bring as many as 1,000 new jobs to the Detroit suburb.

Among the projects:

* The Van Dyke Park Hotel, which is currently closed, will be renovated into a senior citizen housing center. The hotel was purchased Aug. 21 by Triangle Land Property from L&B Trust for $3.6 million, according to city assessing records. Built in 1979, the 243-room hotel had an assessed value of $1,762,030 -- or market value of more than $3.5 million.

"That hotel was once one of the premier hotels in the area. But over time, it has become tired, dilapidated and in desperate need of modernization," Steenbergh said.

* Asset Acceptance, a financial services company, plans to build a new 200,000-sf office building along Van Dyke as it national headquarters. The project, valued at approximately $23 million, will bring 800 permanent jobs, plus 400 construction jobs, city officials said. The new building will be located in the city's Arsenal Industrial District Renaissance Zone, located on the site of a former U.S. Army tank plant.

* A development firm known as Warren Tech Investors plans to build a $10 million, 150,000-sf industrial building in the Arsenal Industrial District, across from the UAW Region 1 facility at the former military site. The company has not found a tenant, but expects the plant could be home to as many as 100 new, good-paying jobs in the future. The state designated the industrial district as a Renaissance Zone years ago, meaning virtually all taxes are waived through 2013.
