DETROIT-Marathon Ashland Petroleum will spend $300 million for new capital projects for its 74,000 barrel-per-day Detroit refinery. One of the plans calls for a $110 million expansion project, which is expected to raise the crude oil throughput at the refinery by 35% to 100,000 barrels per day. Other projects are expected to enable the refinery to produce new clean fuels and further control regulated air emissions. MAP will obtain financing to fund these capital projects.

Construction is expected to start in early 2004 with completion scheduled for sometime in 2005. CB&I Howe-Baker has been chosen to complete a major portion of the project, which is expected to create more than 350 construction jobs with an anticipated peak contractor employment of more than 500 near the project’s completion.

Expansion efforts will incorporate the latest technology to produce new low sulfur gasoline grades and ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel.
