LIVONIA-The Wonderland Mall appears to be slated for demolition. The 900,000-sf mall has been struggling since anchor Montgomery Ward’s went out of business. A vacant Kmart building outside the mall has added to its woes.

Mall owners Shostak Brothers & Company says it now plans to demolish the mall in spring 2004, renovate the closed Kmart building and build a cluster of three new buildings to accommodate more retailers. An existing detached Target store will remain open. The new buildings are expected to allow for easier access and greater exposure along Plymouth and Middle Belt roads. Exact square footages on the new buildings have not yet been set, but a Livonia building official said the final project is expected to represent a significant reduction in retail space from the existing mall.
