Plano, Texas-based Penney's imminent departure was "a mutual decision" between the department store and the mall, according to Talisman.

Besides JCPenney, Brookdale's other anchor tenants are Sears, Mervyn's, Kohl's and Marshall Field's. Talisman, which bought the then-struggling mall in 1997, is nearing completion of an ambitious renovation of the 1.1-million sf regional mall. The mall recently added a new eight-unit food court and has added such restaurants as Goose Creek Tavern & Grill and Embers Diner.
