The facility, which is being called the Marlboro Sports Center, is being developed by an Ocean Twp., NJ-based partnership of the same name. Headed by brothers Frank and Stephen Calandrino, the partnership bought the site just over a year ago for just under $600,000.

The approved facility is a slightly scaled-back version of an earlier 105,000-sf complex that met local resistance over site density and traffic issues. Board of adjustment approval was required because the site is located within a light industrial zone.

When it's completed, the Marlboro Sports Center will include an indoor soccer field, a fitness center with a pool, spa and weight room and some 15,000 sf of office space relating to the facility's operation. Cost of the facility has not been disclosed.
