The university recently unveiled preliminary drawings and plans for a 50,000-seat, open air, on campus stadium. But Sanford's name was nowhere in the mix. The feasibility study, which was done by the university, estimated the cost of the new stadium at $222 million.

Sanford, a 1958 graduate of the University of Minnesota, has asked as conditions of his gift, the stadium be named after him, he have some control over construction and that much of his money come after the stadium was built. University officials have rejected those conditions.

The two sides continue to talk about the terms of the gift. University officials had hoped to have an agreement with Sanford before the feasibility study was released earlier this week. The University says it is also exploring other options, such as selling the naming rights to a corporation.
