"A small but very passionate group of customers wants and demands vehicles with uncompromising levels of performance," said Ed Koerner, GM Powertrain's VP of engineering operations. "The new Performance Build Center is dedicated to satisfying these customers."
UAW Pontiac Local 653 will represent the plant's hourly employees, who will come from other GM locations. Production is slated to begin in the summer of 2005. A GM spokesman said the company has yet to announce the center's expected volume or which vehicles would use the engines.
GM Powertrain, based in Pontiac, produces engines, transmissions, castings and components for GM vehicles and other automotive, marine and industrial manufacturers.
