GM Seeks to Consolidate Locations

DETROIT-General Motors is consolidating operations at its company-owned headquarters. GM subsidiary OnStar will be part of the move.

DETROIT-General Motors will be moving more employees to company owned space next year. About 900 employees from GM subsidiary OnStar will be moving from rented space in Troy, MI, to the GM-owned Renaissance Center in Detoit.

The leases on GM’s two rented buildings, which are now used by OnStar expire in 2004, the company said.

With the relocation, General Motors will have about 6,500 people working at the RenCen, the company’s global headquarters since it purchased the six-tower, 1 million sf office complex in 1996. Since GM moved into the facility, it has spent about $500 million renovating office space, two stories of mixed use retail and restaurant space and is one of the lead organizations in a city-wide effort to redevelop Detroit’s waterfront. The RenCen is on the shores of the Detroit River.
