Her office collected $8.4 million in November, surpassing the November 2002 mark by 10.5% and also eclipsing Haynie's own budget project by 10.1%. Collections for the county's fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, 2003 totaled $93.3 million, up from $91.6 million in 2002 but still below the $104.8 million in 2001 and the record $108.2 million in 2000.

The annual numbers tumbled immediately following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist strikes in New York and Washington, DC and only began to recover four months ago, according to the comptroller's statistics.Haynie calls the November collections "strong" and says "this news is a nice way to start the new fiscal year."

Her office had budgeted $7.6 million for November. October collections totaled $8.5 million, also beating Haynie's projections. For the first two months of the county's fiscal year, collections totaled $16.7 million, up 6.2% from the budgeted $15.9 million and 7.5% ahead of the 2002-2003 fiscal year total of $15.7 million.

The monthly collection numbers in Orange County are watched closely by real estate developers, lenders and appraisers as a key barometer of the local hospitality industry's health.

The November revenue figures are also good news for Walt Disney World which has opened the 2,880-room Pop Century Resort, the largest hotel in Florida, as GlobeSt.com previously reported. The Pop Century is Disney's 23rd hotel opened over its 32-year presence in Central Florida. Disney's total 25,172 rooms gives it a 6% market share of the estimated 400,000 hotel rooms in Florida and about a 25% market share of the estimated 120,000 rooms in Central Florida, industry consultants tell GlobeSt.com. Marriott International, Disney's closest competitor, has about 10,000 rooms in Florida.
