The orchestra's new performance space is called the SPCO Center, which has a 30-ft high ceiling. It will be surrounded by new rehearsal and practice rooms, a musicians' lounge and reception area, all of which are under construction. The orchestra's staff moved into administrative offices into which staff members moved late last year.
The new venue will be on the third floor of the historic Hamm Building and will house a 200-seat rehearsal and performance hall, administrative and ticket offices, a music library, practice rooms and a meeting space for the SPCO's board of directors and other governance activities.
"The SPCO Center will provide a consistent, acoustically superior rehearsal space for the SPCO musicians who currently rehearse at seven different locations during the course of a concert season," says Bruce Coppock, president and managing director of the SPCO.
The rehearsal and performance facilities will be completed in spring 2004.
The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra continues regarding the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts as its main performance hall, though the SPCO Center brings to 10 the number of sites consistently featuring SPCO concerts. Beyond performances, the new space will save the orchestra the costs of moving rehearsals between the Ordway and other available spaces.
The SPCO Center is expected to open in fall 2004.
The historic Hamm Building was built in 1919 as the headquarters for the Hamm Brewing Co. After falling into disrepair, the building was completely renovated in 1995-96 by the Markham Co., its current owner whose principal includes a descendant of the Hamm family.
