Ron Dorf opened a 6,000 sf store at 11300 Wayzata Blvd. near Westridge Market shopping center, the 31st Maytag franchise store in the country.

The store, like other independently owned franchises, features an unusual twist—shoppers can test drive the appliances. The Maytag store allows customers to bring in their own dirty laundry and try out the machines. The store also features wide aisles and a Jenn-Air kitchen for cooking demonstrations and classes.

Dorf, who left the Newton, IA-based Maytag to start the store, likes the upscale concept for selling appliances. He thinks the stores target customer—women—will like it, too.

Although the company originally owned some of the units, individual operators now own them. Maytag hopes to see its independent franchise chain nearly double in size this year.
